Multilateral
Agenda
In international and regional forums both countries have shown similar interests and collaborated closely on economic and other issues. The active presence of Chile in Australia stands out in APEC, OMC, the Cairns Group and other groupings linked to a variety of issues such as the environment, sea, disarmament and non-proliferation, the Antarctic and bio technology.
Forum for East Asia Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC)
Chile appreciates the support that Australia gives to the
Forum for East Asia Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC)
and its active participation in the meetings, particularly in the First Ministerial Meeting, which took place in Chile in March 2001, which was attended by the current Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alexander Downer.
Current FEALAC’s member states are: Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Brunei, Cambodia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Chile, China, Ecuador, El Salvador, Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mexico, Myanmar, New Zealand, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Singapore, Thailand, Uruguay, Venezuela and Vietnam.
In this field there is a high grade of coordination between the permanent missions of Chile and Australia to this international organisation. In this respect, the cooperation in Timor Oriental (where Chile participated with forces to maintain peace during the year 2000) is particularly outstanding. Also, consultation and cooperation on security, disarmament, non-proliferation and other issues have been effective.
