Foreign
Policy
Chile ’s foreign policy is built around two principles: the cause of peace and respect for international law. This policy emphasises the promotion of democracy and the defence of human rights, and advocates the preservation of peace and international security, pursues a social agenda, gender equality, respect for ethnic and cultural diversity, sustainable development, and free trade.
Chile stands against terrorism, fully respects the rules of multilateralism, and seeks consensus among nations. It adheres to the United Nations Disarmament Conference, the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the Tlatelolco Agreement, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the Kyoto Treaty, and the Ottawa Convention on Anti-Personnel Mines.
Chile ’s foreign policy focuses primarily on Latin America , and attaches particular importance to ties with immediate neighbours – Argentina , Bolivia , and Peru , consistent with both domestic and defense policies.
Similarly, it encourages cross-border cooperation as a way of reinforcing bilateral and multilateral action, and of opening new investment and development opportunities for all Chile ’s regions. The Regional Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs supports local governments in the development of international projects and is the link between the Ministry and Chilean missions abroad.
Chile is open to the world and firmly committed to free trade. On economic issues, it practices a policy of open regionalism, allowing it to negotiate both bilaterally and multilaterally, and to take an active part in World Trade Organisation negotiations.
