General Information for Australian Work and Holiday Visa Applicants

 


Based on the Memorandum of Understanding from July 14, 2005 between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Interior and DIMIA and complied with to the current Chilean consular rules for temporary resident visas and to the norms and practices related to foreigners in Chile


Background

This visa program promotes mutual exchange and understanding between Chilean and Australian youth through authorized holidays in the other country and at the same time stimulates the tourism industry in both countries.


General Characteristics

Through this collective agreement participants of the Program are able to hold paid temporary jobs (up to 6 months). Moreover, they are allowed to participate in educational and training activities, up to 4 months only.


Validity and Type of visa

The visa is valid for a period of 12 months.

The visa allows multiple entries, enabling the visa holder to leave and enter Chilean territory during the validity of the visa.


Application Process

The visa application has to be lodged by the applicant at the closest Chilean Consulate in Australia. They are located in Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney. For further details, please click here.


Requirements

1) Being between the age of 18 and 30 at the time of applying
2) To have a degree of higher education or having successfully completed or been accepted to the third year of higher education
3) To have basic knowledge of the Spanish language (to be assessed by the Consul)
4) Not having any dependent offspring
5) To have a valid passport for at least a year from the time of departure
6) To have a return ticket or sufficient funds to purchase the return ticket
7) To have sufficient funds to look after oneself during the initial period in Chile, to be evaluated by the Consul
8) A health certificate stating that the applicant does not have any infectious diseases
9) International medical insurance
10) No criminal records
11) Letter of support from DIMIA in Australia stating that the applicant fulfils all the prior requirements of eligibility.

Documents to be lodged

1) Valid passport
2) Original study certificate, issued by an institution of higher education (after Y 12)
3) Original Certificate of Police Records
4) Original health certificate
5) Medical insurance for a minimum of one year
6) Four recent color photos
7) Letter of support or presentation by DIMIA which enables the applicant to apply for the program
8) Original paper documenting that the applicant or his/her family (in case he or she is living with his/her family in Australia) have sufficient funds to get by during the first three months in Chile
9) A statutory declaration stating that there is no dependant children
10) A fully completed and signed form named ‘Cedula Consular’ for temporary resident visas, which can be obtained at any Chilean Consulate.

Consuls in Australia will try to prevent requesting any further documents and information from the applicant if these have already been presented to DIMIA or if such information can be obtained at interview.


Personal Interview

The applicant will be subject to a personal interview conducted by the nearest Consul of Chile in Australia. The consul can then grant or deny the visa despite the applicant fulfilling the prerequisites and presenting the required documentation.


Final Formalities

When the visa is granted the applicant needs to pay the corresponding consular fee of $ 204 (amount subject to confirmation) and show a return air plane ticket or proof of sufficient funds to purchase ticket when in Chile.


Once the visa has been granted, the applicant has 90 days to enter Chilean territory.
