During 2004, for the first time in several years, areas of diversification appeared in the market, such as on the spot copper exports for Codelc o in April, which reached US$5.6 million; salmon food/bait products exported by Alitec for US$600 million, which were purchased by Tasmanian fishermen; a specific sale of elevator parts; water-based ice-creams, which Nestle began to export regularly from June, 2004; smoked salmon exported by an Australian company based in Chile, Safcol; new rubber tyres exported by Good Year; air compressors, peach conserves; drink machines; broadcast apparatus; plastic containers for fruit; car parts and accessories.

Products which have demonstrated mayor growth over the past year include: carraghenina (seaweed used as an ingredient in the health industry); moulds for the production of steel; preserved offcuts (salted or in brine); white wines of guaranteed origin; molybdenum ; cards;; lamination products; pine wood chips, parts and accessories automobile bodywork and dried or dehydrated plumes.

Other emerging products in the local market include bags for the carriage of fruit, raulí and lenga timber, processed prunes/plumes, frozen blackberries, dried/dehydrated tomatoes, matches, wines, eel, preserved mussels, etc. This diversification in the range of exports to Australia has resulted in a sustained growth in shipments/consignments, which has alleviated the problems of competition in the event of unforeseen price fluctuations.

Products which have experienced considerable export decline in 2004 include: copper products, with exports decreasing by almost US$18 million; common hake filets which experienced an export decline of more than US$3 million; leather and furs, with export decline of US$1.5 million.

2. Number of Companies & Exported Products

During 2004, 292 products were exported through 214 companies. The number of exported products was consistent with the year before, while the number of active export companies grew by 1. This growth is demonstrative of the dynamism of trade exchanges between Australia and Chile, as well as the diversification of the export range, especially with respect to higher quality goods, and non-traditional products.

4. Principal Goods Imported from Australian

Chile is the second South American export destination for Australian products behind Brazil, with approximately 120 Australian companies trading regularly in Chile, many of which base their Latin American branches in Santiago.

Coal exports have experienced a large growth, representing 54% of the exports from Australia to Chile. The import of motors and explosives for mining, malt barley (which recently reappeared in the range of import products from Australia) continue to be important to the trade relationship. In 2004 the Central Bank of Chile imported, for the first time, plastic bank notes to a sum of US$2.7 million. These four products comprise 72% of Australian exports to Australia.
